Today's interesting political news and opinion

Marine for Life: Tuesday, November 3, 2015 is the 51st anniversary of the graduation of Platoon 273 from MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina, when I earned the title Marine. My DIs, Sgt. Ezekiel Owens, Jr., Sgt. Michael P. Martin and Sgt. William H. Harris (the Senior DI) gave me the priceless gifts of self-discipline and tenacity, which have made all the difference in my life. I haven't seen them since graduation day, but think of them every day. Sgt. Owens died in 2013; I do not know if the others are yet living, but I ask God to bless and protect all three of them every day. To all my Marine Brothers and Sisters, Semper Fidelis. It was the privilege of a lifetime to wear the same uniform as you, and claim the same title. I hope I have brought it credit. ~Bob

Random Thoughts for November, 2015. By Robert A. Hall

Excerpt: Fred Thomson, the former U.S. senator from Tennessee, Republican presidential candidate and “Law and Order” actor, dies Sunday after a recurrence of lymphoma at the age of 73.

Worth Reading: Has the Marco Moment arrived?
Excerpt: Marco Rubio was already cruising to a breakout performance in the latest GOP presidential debate when an attack from Donald Trump opened up more air time for him to respond according to the evening’s format. “Well, I’ve learned the rules on this,” the Florida senator said coolly — and proceeded to swat back the celebrity billionaire with ease on Trump’s signature issue, immigration. If Wednesday’s debate was any indication, Rubio has learned not only the rules, but the playbook. And he has reached the point where he appears ready to execute it.

Interesting: How CNBC actually messed up Wednesday’s GOP debate. By Katie Zezima, Washington Post
Excerpt: Wednesday’s Republican presidential debate became as much about the journalists who moderated it as it was about candidates who answered — or batted away — their questions. The moderators, their questions and their lack of control over a fractious field of candidates jostling for air time became a central part of the debate’s narrative. And the shower of criticism that followed illustrated how powerfully anti-media rhetoric can resonate with the Republican base.

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/426246/gang-couldnt-bias-straight-john-fund
Excerpt: How bad were CNBC’s debate moderators last night? So bad that they were ridiculed by even their liberal colleagues. Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo called out “perhaps the most comically poor debate prep we’ve ever seen in a national debate. Are these folks even journalists?” Adam Nagourney of the New York Times asked mid-debate: “Would it be hard to do a panel swap-out during the break? Is Jake Tapper or Chris Wallace in the wings?” Think Progress, which almost functions as Hillary’s personal blog, admitted the debate “was kind of a train wreck.”

Republican National Committee suspends its debate partnership with NBC News
Excerpt: Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, has informed NBC News that it is suspending the party's debate relationship with the network -- in particular, a planned Feb. 26, 2016, debate at the University of Houston -- claiming Wednesday night's CNBC debate was conducted in 'bad faith.'

Worth Reading: If You’re Black, Lead the Pack. By Jonah Goldberg
Excerpt: One could argue that he’s even more authentically African-American than Barack Obama, given that Obama’s mother was white and he was raised in part by his white grandparents. In his autobiography, Obama writes at length about how he grew up outside the traditional African-American experience — in Hawaii and Indonesia — and how he consciously chose to adopt a black identity when he was in college. Meanwhile, Carson grew up in Detroit, the son of a very poor, very hard-working single mother. His tale of rising from poverty to become the head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital is one of the most inspiring rags-to-riches stories of the last half-century.

Interesting: Ben Carson, Beating All Comers. By Alan Gerber and Barry Nalebuff
Excerpt: Ben Carson isn’t just ahead in Iowa. As of now, it looks as if he can beat any of his Republican presidential challengers in a one-on-one contest. ... Instead of asking who gets the most first-place votes, we ran a pairwise contest between each of the top 12 candidates.

Black Suspect charged with setting two in the string of seven St. Louis area church fires
Excerpt: David Lopez Jackson, 35, was charged Friday afternoon with setting two in a string of seven church fires this month, but authorities say they don’t know the motive. ... Dotson did not specifically accuse Jackson of the other church fires but said he was a suspect and suggested that further investigation might result in additional charges for additional crimes. Although the locations of the fires in predominantly African-American neighborhoods gave rise to speculation that the motive might be race-related, Jackson is black. (So much for the racism meme. ~Bob)

Interesting: ObamaCare Gives Mississippi The Blues: Rates Leap 60%. BY JED GRAHAM
http://news.investors.com/politics-obamacare/102815-777807-obamacare-individual-mandate-tax-penalty-mississipi-hit.htm#ixzz3pyHthvVI
Excerpt: Mississippi will be ground zero for ObamaCare's individual mandate to buy coverage or pay a tax penalty. The state already is near the bottom when it comes to the percentage of the subsidy-eligible individuals who are enrolled via HealthCare.gov — just 38%. Now Mississippi's subsidized premiums are about to jump far more than any of the 36 other states using HealthCare.gov. (And here is an illuminating aspect of ObamaCare in operation.  Yet not a surprise to some, since various critics predicted years ago that exactly this kind of scenario would take place once the system really got rolling.  Either the costs would jump or the deductibles would jump, and it looks like both did, but the deductibles really got the prize.  For people on the lower economic rungs, a $6500 deductible just means you don't sign up at all, for you it's not going to make any sense. The system was supposed to have safeguards against this, all kinds of subsidies, and we know a lot of people do get subsidies.  But clearly the plan is far from perfect and a bunch of people are falling through the cracks.  And this will only get worse in time. --Del)

Worth Reading: Obama celebrates his counterfeit war victories. By Michael Gerson, Washington Post
Excerpt: At that event, it may be hard to pick among the sessions. Even if you consider the Iran nuclear deal a good thing, everywhere else in the region is likely to be markedly worse when President Obama leaves office than when he took it: Iraq in pieces; Syria in ruins; the rise of a terrorist state with unprecedented reach and resources; Yemen in civil war; Egypt under repressive military rule; Libya in chaos; Afghanistan with unraveling security; poisoned relations with Israel and the Sunni powers.

The Marines’ last stand. By Ray Starmann
http://usdefensewatch.com/2015/10/the-marines-last-stand/
Excerpt: Leave it to the Marines to make the US military’s last stand. It’s the last stand for the Marines, the last stand for reality, the last stand for the military to function as a cohesive war fighting organization and not a Santa Monica yoga class. In America 180, everything is upside down. What kind of madcap lunatic asylum do we live in when the military has to ask for exemptions to keep women out of combat? This is what happens when policy is being dictated by radicals whose idea of combat is elbowing for a place in line at the Bloomingdale’s’ lunch counter. This is what happens when the military’s leaders are gutless moral cowards. (We can only pray, and pray hard, that the current CMC has the cojones to stand tall against the total jerk SecNav on this insane push to put women into the grunts.  The Corps has done a great job so far of demonstrating in really careful, fair, scientific studies that mixed units cannot perform as well as all male units.  Hopefully this will keep Mabus from issuing some kind of Draconian direct order to mix women into every single Marine job.  But it's hard to say if he will hold back, he has already said abysmally stupid things about it.  Heaven help us all. --S/F --Del)

William Gay's purple cleats part of anti-domestic violence efforts
Excerpt: "I'm not trying to be a bad teammate or embarrass the owners," Gay said Thursday. "There's so much pink -- on shoes, on gloves -- for breast cancer awareness; I think domestic violence awareness is just as important." (Every time I see the pink shoes or pink ribbons, I remember that pulmonary fibrosis, my disease, kills more people than breast cancer, but BC gets 80 times as much research funding. Some lives matter more than others. ~Bob)

Doubtful: Gingrich: ‘One To Three’ Odds Hillary Clinton Will Be Indicted
Depends on DOI.  Best guess---the whole campaign thing is a distraction from WWIII.  In the end, the dude ain't leaving.  Hillary will be told to stop campaigning or go directly to jail.  Think he would love to snatch victory from her jaws and rub defeat in her face once again, even though it violates the Constitution.  What Constitution?  It is in tatters now.  Nothing stopped the illegal release of 5 of the worst terrorists to Qatar....nor the illegal appropriation of almost $1 million to fund the operation.  A few senators sputtered.  NO ONE ACTED.  There is no law in the US....unless you are out of favor with the regime....just like USSR.  If you disagree, you're crazy and can go to an asylum and be given drugs, just as Sean Penn suggested.  Biden coaxed out of competition.  Sanders "too socialist."  Gee, that leaves..... Beg him and he might stay....  He has said three times he would win hands down if he ran. --Anon. Obama may not like Hillary, but he doesn't want a Republican undoing his transformation. I rate this as VERY unlikely, as the DOJ is entirely an arm of the Progressive Party. ~Bob

Excerpt: A new grading scale that redefines what constitutes an "A" or an "F" is causing strife and confusion in the Cotati-Rohnert Park school district. The new system is called the equal interval scale. It departs from the traditional A to F scale in which students receive F's for scores below 59 percent. Instead, the scale awards F's only for scores below 20 percent. Under the new policy, grades rise in 20-point increments. For example, scores of 20 to 40 percentage points earn D- through D+ grades -- and so on, up the ladder. Students get an A- for scoring between 80 and 85, which traditionally is low B territory. Students, even if they do not hand in homework or take a test, get 50 percent. Under the new rule, it's possible for a student who skips a test to receive a better grade than a student who takes the test and does poorly. (How much more can we "dumb down" students?  Another example of PC BULL EXCREMENT. Not unlike everyone's a winner.  Look what this kind of goo-goo liberal BS is doing to the workforce.  Quality workers are a dying breed. --JB)

China ends one-child policy. By JUNE CHENG
Excerpt: The government’s reasoning, however, is purely economic: The United Nations estimates China will lose 67 million workers from 2010 to 2030 while increasing its elderly population from 110 million to 210 million. By 2050, the elderly would make up one-quarter of the population, meaning a ballooning elderly population depending on a dwindling workforce.

Healing a nation driven mad by Obama. Matt Barber compares "Snapping" author David Kupelian's writing to that of C.S. Lewis
Excerpt: .... "The progressive left under Obama," he writes of his new book, "is accomplishing much more than just enlarging government, redistributing wealth and de-Christianizing the culture. With its wild celebration of sexual anarchy, its intimidating culture of political correctness and its incomprehension of the fundamental sacredness of human life, it is also, whether intentionally or not, promoting widespread dependency, debauchery, family breakdown, crime, corruption, depression and addiction."  "Surveying this growing chaos in American society," notes the book's summary, "Kupelian exposes both the utopian revolutionaries and their extraordinary methods that have turned America's most cherished values literally upside down – to the point that madness is celebrated and normality demonized."

Unbelievable: Kerry: Middle East “home of populations that are energetic, youthful, forward-looking. It is in them that we place our faith.”

Sorority Student Dresses Like Rapper Lil Wayne — Racial Controversy Erupts
Excerpt: According to a report from Fox16, some students at Arkansas Tech, a university in Russellville, AR, are upset with a fellow student for dressing up in what they deem an offensive costume for a Halloween costume party. The photo shows a sorority member of Zeta Tau Alpha dressed up as popular rapper Lil Wayne. The Wednesday costume contest received attention all over campus because of the girl’s decision to paint herself in blackface. NASA Adds to Evidence of Mysterious Ancient Earthworks
Excerpt:  High in the skies over Kazakhstan, space-age technology has revealed an ancient mystery on the ground.  Satellite pictures of a remote and treeless northern steppe reveal colossal earthworks — geometric figures of squares, crosses, lines and rings the size of several football fields, recognizable only from the air and the oldest estimated at 8,000 years old.  The largest, near a Neolithic settlement, is a giant square of 101 raised mounds, its opposite corners connected by a diagonal cross, covering more terrain than the Great Pyramid of Cheops. Another is a kind of three-limbed swastika, its arms ending in zigzags bent counterclockwise.  (Some time ago, we discussed the possibility that organized human societies predate known history by many thousands of years.  Please add this to the collection of inconvenient evidence indicating it could be true, see especially the 15th and 17th paragraphs.  Note that as with the Nasca lines, the dating is wildly speculative; with discrepancies like these, the true date of construction could be as much as TENS of thousands of years earlier.  There is literally no way to tell.  --Ron P.)

This School District Is Standing Up to the Federal Government’s Bullying Over Transgender Students and Locker Rooms
More blatant PC insanity, when kids who decide they aren't the gender that their body is built for want to declare themselves and "come out", and instantly be treated as the other gender.  No matter how much sympathy I have for such individuals and their situation, not until they've undergone full surgical transformation and hormone therapy should they be treated exactly as the new gender.  Until then, the best answer by far is private dressing rooms, and if that's not good enough for their egos and self-focus, and not enough for the PC Gestapo, sorry, the other kids have rights too.  And we're not going to run over all of them for the one of you.  Using the private dressing room is not a super hardship unless you choose to see it that way, so how about having just a tad of consideration for everyone else? --Del

The Life-Saving Benefits of More CO2. By Matt Ridley
Excerpt: France's leading television weather forecaster, Philippe Verdier, was taken off air last week (10/19) for writing that there are "positive consequences" of climate change. His book published earlier this month, Climat Investigation (currently available only in French) denounced "the planetary scandal of global warming - a war-machine designed to keep us afraid. At its heart, it's a science manipulated and politicized, of conflict of interest, of corruption€¦ a self-serving engine, a new religion, the framework of a new faith." (Well, actually a lot of us have known this for a very long time, but let's not worry about that.  Let's look at the fascinating data presented. Hmm, maybe there's a bit more to this matter than the sky is falling and the oceans will rise 20 feet before we know it? --Del)

Worth Reading: Man’s post about traffic stop goes viral
Excerpt: I’m a black man wearing a hoodie and strapped. According to certain social movements, I shouldn’t be alive right now because the police are allegedly out to kill minorities. Maybe…just maybe…that notion is bunk. Maybe if you treat police officers with respect, they will do the same to you. Police officers are people, too. By far and large, most are good people and they’re not out to get you. I’d like to thank those two officers and TPD in general for another professional contact.

America needs an independent presidential candidate. By Jim Webb

Interesting: Zimbabwe on the Rhine
Excerpt: It’s hard not to draw parallels between the current situation in Europe and what has happened to Zimbabwe under the leadership of African dictator Robert Mugabe. When Mr. Mugabe assumed office in the late 1970s the African nation was one of the wealthiest country on the continent. Now, more than thirty-five years later, it is one of the poorest. Zimbabwe has been on a steady decline towards rock bottom, due to political incompetence, sheer stupidity and an insatiable hatred of traditional Western values. One can of course describe Zimbabwe’s transformation by slightly tweaking Norwegian anthropologist Thomas Hylland Erikson’s infamous quote about white majority nations in Europe:

Excerpt: Is an unseen enemy taking its toll against ISIS? Indications are there is and, as such, it is having a devastating impact upon ISIS. In fact, it may well be wreaking much more havoc among ISIS than are U.S. air strikes against the terrorist group. ISIS finds itself fighting an enemy it is hard-pressed to defeat. That enemy is AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). (Wouldn't it be great if this really works out the way this article indicates it may? --Del)

No, 10,000 Children Aren't Killed Or Injured By Guns Every Year. By Matt Vespa
All the passionate ultra-Liberals share a serious disregard for mere facts and logic.  Anything they can bring up to foster whatever case they want to make, is just fine.  Correspondence to any reality is of zero concern.  Below is one more example.  My favorite, that we've heard 1000 times, is that women make less money than men on average because of getting paid much less for doing the exact same work.  That it's been against federal law for decades and no employers even think about it anymore because of the instant lawsuit and huge fines is somehow never thought of. The anti-gun people love to quote statistics that are at best misleading and often just totally false is hardly news to most of us.  But here is one more case of it. --Del

Obama Continues to Bad Mouth and Alienate America’s Police Officers
Excerpt: President Barack Obama continued to alienate our nation’s police officers this week when he addressed the “International Association of Chiefs of Police” during this year’s conference in Chicago. It was interesting that in one of the world’s most dangerous and violent cities, where police “brutality” is the least of residents concerns, the president would take the opportunity to blame police for crime. Once again, Obama and his liberal supporters seem blind to the irony of the situation and his speech. He told the gathered chiefs that racial bias and profiling is probably the world’s biggest problem. (I thought it was global warming! --JB).

Gun Confiscation Plan – Everyone Needs To See This
Excerpt: I was extremely disappointed when I heard that my fellow law enforcement executive colleagues had gotten into bed with Obama and his gun confiscation mission. That’s really what it’s about. It’s not about reducing violence, it’s not about reducing mass murder or suicides. The real intent of Obama and these gun groups is gun confiscation and they know they are going to have to do it step by step. They’re not going to be able to go after that today, as there would be fierce blowback. So they are doing it in stealth ways and this IACP meeting is one of those ways.
