General News and Comment

Book Recommendation: The Rods and the Axe by Tom Kratman
Another terrific book in the Carrera series. Kratman is a retired Army LtCol who writes military science fiction, with a very realistic picture of war. In my view, he gets better with every book. But that may be because this is the most recent I have read--I've loved everything by him so far. If you haven't read any of the Carrera series, do yourself a favor and start with A Desert Called Peace by Tom Kratman. ~Bob

Worth Reading: Chicago Democrats a protected species on the national stage. By John Kass
Excerpt: Prominent Chicago Democrats have had an easy time with the national media for decades — as easy as shaking a ring of keys to distract an anxious child in church. Former Mayor Richard M. Daley rode a bicycle in photo ops and put a few plants on the roof of City Hall, leading the national news networks to cast him as the “green” mayor, not as the absolute boss of a broken and corrupt political system that piled debt on the city and drained its future for the benefit of the insiders. President Barack Obama appeared on the late-night talk shows as the mystical healer of America’s broken politics, not as some untested suit who held the hand of now-imprisoned bagman Tony Rezko while learning to cross Chicago’s political streets. (Kass is a Chicago Tribune columnist. Brave man, often takes on the mob as well as the corrupt politicians. ~Bob)

Voter fraud in MN Democrat Primary
I sent a liberal close to me the article about the Democrat in MN filing the fraud claim against her opponent, who is Somali. The case involved 141 Somalis registered to vote at the same address, a commercial space where no one lives, a clear violation of MN law. He has denied that voter fraud exists and asked to see evidence, but has refused to look at it on the grounds that it was linked from a website for a group he thinks is racist. His response to this case was, " I feel the power slowly slipping away from the old white guys and they are scared shitless. Disfranchise as many voters as possible - try to hold on to at least the image of being in charge." The "Old White Guy" here is a white woman, and a very liberal Democrat, Rep. Phyllis Kahn. Her legislative bio says, in part: "She has a B.A. in physics from Cornell, a Ph.D. in biophysics from Yale and a M.P.A. from the J.F.K. School of Government at Harvard. She was the chief author of the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act (controlling smoking in public places), the computer crime and computer virus laws, and legislation on nuclear safety, radioactive waste disposal, field tests of genetically modified crops and infectious waste disposal. She also authored laws to require gender equity in athletics and laws prohibiting discrimination based on age or disability. Rep. Kahn has been instrumental in obtaining funding for parks, trails, historic preservation, art-enhancement of State buildings, and the expansion of community and urban forests." I pointed out that he is an "Old White Guy" holding on to power in his management job, which he doubtless got due to White Privilege, and that in consideration of Social Justice he should resign if they promised to hire a minority in his place. But justice was done. The local prosecutor dismissed the case, saying the violation was "inadvertent." So in MN, if you say you inadvertently violated the law--you're good. If you are a Muslim immigrant from Africa, that is.

The endless, excruciating idiocy of the Internet — in one very stupid viral photo
Excerpt: This is a photo of director Steven Spielberg sitting next to a triceratops prop on the set of “Jurassic Park.” This is a 6,000-post-deep comment thread in which many, many people express their deep outrage over Spielberg’s “slaughter” of the “majestic animal.”

OBAMA: ‘I’m Just Telling the Truth Now, I’m Not Running For Office Anymore.’
Well, they say there's a first time for everything. ~Bob. Excerpt: In other words, and as we and many others have profusely told the Obama oglers from 2006 until today, that BHO is a liar and lied his half-black butt off in order to get elected. Check this admission out, Clashers. Oh, and pay attention to this dipsticks in the crowd clapping like seals when he admits to his practice of prevarication.

Worth Reading: Australian Judge Endorses Incest
Excerpt: “A jury might find nothing untoward in the advance of a brother towards his sister once she had sexually matured, had sexual relationships with other men and was now ‘available,’ not having [a] sexual partner. . . . If this was the 1950s and you had a jury of 12 men there, which is what you’d invariably have, they would say it’s unnatural for a man to be interested in another man or a man being interested in a boy. Those things have gone.” Judge Neilson made the comments during the trial of a brother charged with raping his younger sister. The man has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting his sister when she was 10 or 11 years old in 1973 or 1974 but has pleaded not guilty to charges relating to sex they had in 1981, when she was 18 and he was 26. “By that stage they are both mature adults,” the judge said. “The complainant has been sexually awoken, shall we say, by having two relationships with men and she had become ‘free’ when the second relationship broke down. The only thing that might change that is the fact that they were a brother and sister but we’ve come a long way from the 1950s—when the position of the English Common Law was that sex outside marriage was not lawful.”

Target Becomes Target of Armed Robberies After Declaring Themselves Gun-Free Zones
Excerpt: This is hardly the first time something like this has happened. Recently, a barbecue restaurant that was very adamant about and probably proud of their no-guns policy was robbed at gunpoint. There’s a shock. Breitbart’s reporting now that there have already been two robberies in Target parking lots ever since Target announced a ban on their customers’ 2nd Amendment rights: (Criminals know that in a "gun free" zone, only they are likely to be armed. Stay out of Target to stay safe. ~Bob)

Waitresses at Colorado eatery carry loaded guns
Excerpt: Many stores and restaurants are telling people not to bring their guns inside, but one western Colorado restaurant not only embraces the practice of packing heat, it encourages its customers to carry openly — and its waitresses do, too. As she takes your order at Shooters Grill in the town of Rifle — yes, Rifle — waitress Ashlee Saenz carries a pad, pen and a loaded Ruger .357 Blackhawk revolver holstered on her leg, Old West style. It's loaded, and she knows how to use it.

Life After Wartime: Combating the Veteran-as-Victim Narrative. By Mackubin Thomas Owens
Excerpt: The image of the veteran as victim had its genesis in the anti-Vietnam war left of the 1960s and ’70s. According to this image, the Vietnam war was uniquely brutal and unjust, and it brutalized those who fought it. At first the antiwar left vilified veterans as war criminals and baby-killers. But this approach evolved into the idea that the Vietnam veteran was a victim: He was victimized first by his country, which disproportionately sent the poor off to fight an unjust war. Then he was victimized by a military that dehumanized him and turned him into a killer, one who was dangerous to society because he could lash out at any time. The press was complicit in perpetuating the negative stereotype of the Vietnam veteran. B.G. Burkett and Glenna Whitley’s incomparable 1998 book,Stolen Valor, explains how. Burkett used the Freedom of Information Act to check the actual records of the “image makers” used by reporters to flesh out their stories on homelessness, Agent Orange, suicide, drug abuse, criminality, and alcoholism. What he found was astounding. More often than not, the showcase “veterans” who cried on camera about their dead buddies, about committing or witnessing atrocities, or about some heroic action in combat that led them to their current dead end in life, were impostors. Many had never been in Vietnam, or even in the armed services. Burkett’s book stands as a rebuke to a generation of journalists who were so predisposed to believe the worst about the Vietnam veteran that they failed to do due diligence in checking the facts. The “Vietnam vet goes berserk” angle became a staple of journalism. (I didn't see this when it came out, but think it's worth sending out for others to see and perhaps pass on. This is the kind of thing we are making available at the Vietnam Veterans for Factual History website. It is a super trove of the most accurate and best explained contributions about the real history of our involvement in Viet Nam. Check it out at http://vvfh.org/ --Del)

Barack Obama is what happens when Affirmative Action and The Peter Principle have a baby.

Selling Guns in the Hood (Prank gone bad)
this is beyond stupid.

Vietnam’s Overdue Alliance With America. By Tuong Lai
Excerpt: HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam — OURS is a small country. We Vietnamese cannot and must not entrust our future to anyone, but we urgently need strategic allies at a moment in history when our priority is to defeat our present-day enemy: China. China’s move in May, to place an offshore oil rig on the Vietnamese continental shelf, and its arrogant statements in June, at an Asian security summit meeting known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, exposed China’s sea piracy to the world. These developments should alarm anyone in Vietnam who still clings to the myth of brotherly love between our nation and China. (A very nice article, but I wonder what will happen to the writer, if he is still in Viet Nam. This could be considered to be abusive to the government and the Party, and we know they aren't very patient about such things. But that it got written at all is really good, a very public voice about the government changing is something Viet Nam needs. --Del. Might have been approved by the government as a trial balloon. ~Bob)

Worth Reading: Polar Vortex Summer Version Prelude to Brutal Winter and Potential Major Energy Issues. By Joseph D'Aleo
http://patriotpost.us/opinion/27394
Excerpt: Last winter, residents of many parts of the North paid as much for electricity as in all of 2012. Some power plants came within two days of running out of oil in New England. During the winter of 2014, coal was the only fuel with the ability to meet demand increases for electricity, providing 92 percent of incremental electricity in January/February, 2014 versus the same months in 2013. With the projected closure of 60 gigawatts (GW) of coal plant capacity, virtually the entire U.S. is rapidly reaching the brink of significantly higher prices for electricity and being unable to meet either the summer or winter peak demand for power. Unless immediate steps are taken to halt coal plant closures.

The Art of Loving Your Country
Excerpt: There’s no better time than July 4th to talk about love of country. People and communities proudly fly the Stars and Stripes. Fireworks explode. Patriotism abounds. But what does it mean to be patriotic and love ones’ country? (I was thinking about this kid who lived around the corner from me growing up...the one who threw the rock at the bus stop that hit me in the mouth the morning of the class field trip. Turns out he's a PhD psychologist contributing to Forbes. --GS)

How U.S. Taxpayers Subsidize Fossil Fuels in Russia, Saudi Arabia While Being Penalized at Home. By Kevin Mooney
Excerpt: Americans have to pay more for electricity and compete for fewer jobs because of President Obama’s regulatory curbs on fossil fuels at home, even as their tax dollars support expansion of those same energy sources abroad.

Banding together in NC to push for reform at Veterans Affairs. By Tristan Scott
Excerpt: Here’s how you can tell there’s a serious problem at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs: The Obama administration is finally admitting it. For several years, the president and his allies boasted of improved performance at the second-largest federal department, talking of major funding boosts and expanded access to VA services as a point of pride. But the facts finally got in the way. The department’s bureaucratic dysfunction, incompetence and corruption have been laid bare in a patient care scandal that has engulfed the VA. Veterans and taxpayers are now all too aware of how the VA’s service mission has been hijacked by long wait times for health care, backlogged benefit applications, phony wait times and abusive behavior. And they recognize that while the situation is not a new development, it has grown measurably worse over the past five years. (The pressure is on and hopefully will continue to climb until Congress does what's really needed to break the "corrosive culture". That will take one hell of an effort, since it means taking away the bulletproof vest that the civil service union has, and making it possible to actually discipline and even fire people for bad performance. --Del. info@concernedveteransforamerica.org)

Connecticut Gun Company Turns to Texas. By Sarah Jean Seman
Excerpt: America’s oldest family owned and operated gun manufacturing company O.F. Mossberg & Sons, has its eye on Texas. The company was founded in Connecticut in 1919; however, after Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) passed one of the strictest gun-control legislations in the nation last April, Mossberg & Sons is looking to expand in a more gun-friendly state.

Excerpt: Last week the Associated Press published their annual report on government waste fraud and abuse. I found it quite illuminating. After reading what our taxpayer money is being wasted on, I was amazed by how easy it would be to stop the waste and fraud if someone really cared enough.

Surprise! Nation's 2nd Largest Teachers Union Withdraws Support of Common Core
Excerpt: In a major surprise, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the country’s second-largest teachers union, opened its biannual convention Friday by announcing a step back from its support for Common Core education standards. The group, gathering in Los Angeles, announced that it will now provide monetary grants from its Innovation Fund for teachers who want to critique the standards or even write entirely new ones themselves.

It’s official: Americans say Mitt Romney was pretty much right about Russia. By Aaron Blake
Excerpt: And we can say that, at least for now, the American people agree with Mitt Romney (pretty much). According to a new survey from the Pew Research Center, Americans see Russia as the No. 1 future threat to the United States.

Obamacare News

Supply Side Contraceptives. By John C. Goodman
Excerpt: The Obama administration says the cost of providing contraceptives will be offset by savings that result from greater use of birth control, “fewer unplanned pregnancies” and improvement in women’s health. ... The trouble is: there is no evidence for that claim. In fact, there is no evidence that making contraceptives free leads to their greater use. The ObamaCare mandate requiring contraceptives to be available without deductibles or copayments is apparently not causing women to use more contraceptives according to a report by the IMS Institute. (The mandate has nothing to do with healthcare costs and everything to do with buying votes from young, single women, a key Democrat demographic, by giving them something they want and making someone else pay for it. ~Bob)

The Great Unknown: ObamaCare cost unclear amid changes to the law. By Jim Angle
Excerpt: President Obama’s health care law has been delayed and changed so many times that the official budget scorekeepers can no longer keep track of what the law costs.
The changes, and the overall uncertainty regarding the price tag, are raising concerns about whether the law even has enough revenue coming in to pay for the program.
Excerpt: This leaves Democrats in a political pickle. They passed a law to protect religious freedom, but they do not desire to protect religious freedom when doing so interrupts their risible war-on-women soap opera. ... The Democratic theory of rights is extraordinarily convenient in that it would concentrate power in institutions such as the media, the unions, and the government bureaucracies — institutions that are controlled by and friendly to Democrats and their interests. But if ordinary people wish to form an organization to work for, say, reform of the criminally abusive agency that enforces our tax code, they will have to ask Democrats’ permission first, and any discourse in which they engage will have to be conducted according to the Democrats’ rules.

Worth Reading: Washington Post Fact Checker: Democrats on Hobby Lobby: ‘Misspeaks,’ ‘opinion’ and overheated rhetoric
Excerpt: “Really, we should be afraid of this court. The five guys who start determining what contraceptions are legal. Let’s not even go there.” — Pelosi This is a very odd statement from the House Democratic leader, given that the majority opinion flatly states that “under our cases, women (and men) have a constitutional right to obtain contraceptives,” citing the 1965 ruling in Griswold v. Connecticut, which under the right to privacy nullified a law prohibiting the use of contraceptives. ... But this collection of rhetoric suggests that Democrats need to be more careful in their language about the ruling. All too often, lawmakers leap to conclusions that are not warranted by the facts at hand. Simply put, the court ruling does not outlaw contraceptives, does not allow bosses to prevent women from seeking birth control and does not take away a person’s religious freedom.

Undocumented Democrat News

TSA Allows Illegals to Fly Without Verifiable ID
Excerpt: Breitbart is reporting that illegal aliens are being permitted to fly on commercial airlines without valid identification. Does anyone else see the potential threat to our national security or are we just crazy? See below…Illegal aliens are being allowed to fly on commercial airliners without valid identification, according to the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC). “The aliens who are getting released on their own recognizance are being allowed to board and travel commercial airliners by simply showing their Notice to Appear forms,” NBPC’s Local 2455 Spokesman, Hector Garza, told Breitbart Texas.

No 'Blank Check.' From The Patriot Post
School officials in Lynn, Massachusetts, say illegal aliens are posing as children in order to enroll in public high schools. "Some of them have had gray hair and they're telling you that they're 17 years old and they have no documentation," said Jamie Cerulli, the Lynn mayor's chief of staff. Hey, at least they're trying to learn English. It's not clear how many are succeeding, but as long as so many illegals are allowed to remain here, more will come. Meanwhile, in Congress, Republicans have virtually rejected Barack Obama's request for what they're calling a "blank check" to deal with the crisis. Obama seeks $3.7 billion in additional funding, but he's allowed a crisis to fester -- and had a hand in creating it -- in order to exploit the crisis for spending priorities. Does anyone think this president is going to deport Democrats' future constituents?

Worth Reading: Israel Is the Victim of Mohammed’s War Against the Jews. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: To understand why, let’s step into a time machine and go back to the spring of 632. ... Back in Medina, Mohammed had come down with the sniffles. He had a fever and a headache and there wasn’t any Tylenol around for miles. Mohammed hadn’t been a very good man and he made a very bad patient. Upon being told that he had pleurisy, he claimed that only people possessed by Satan came down with that disease so he couldn’t possibly have it and instead blamed the Jews for poisoning him.

Excerpt: Minority Christians in Syria and neighboring Iraq faced more upheaval Monday, July 7, after an Islamic group expelled tens of thousands of residents from their homes and crucified at least nine people.

Bombs Away! By David Wilder
Excerpt: Presently we are experiencing bombs falling on Israel, launched by a terrorist government whose goal is the demise of the State of Israel and the annihilation of all its Jewish citizens. Simultaneously Israel is returning the favor, not in an effort to kill all Gazan Arabs, rather to exterminate the animals who are causing 'Red Alert' to be sounded, not only in Sderot, Ashkelon and Ashdod, but also in Beit Shemesh, Jerusalem, Haifa, Caesarea, Tel Aviv, Nes Tziona, Rishon L'Tzion, and many other places, and yes, including even Hebron.

Excerpt: On July 7 in San Francisco, Muslims attacked Jews at a pro-Israel demo. 300 anti-Israel protesters surround and threaten 30 peaceful, pro-Israel demonstrators in San Francisco. They call for another intifada, and the destruction of the Jewish State. Here is one account from Atlas reader Robin:

We’re at an impasse on an Iran deal, so it’s time for new sanctions. By Jennifer Rubin
Excerpt: News reports suggest that the parties are nowhere near a deal in Vienna on Iran’s nuclear program. That’s unremarkable given that the Iranians refuse to dismantle anything and even this administration insists it must dismantle most of its program. Still, the fact that the administration for now is not folding should be reassuring to Congress and to our allies in the Middle East

Palestinian Officials Openly Fault Hamas
Excerpt: While American Islamists have remained mute about Hamas' instigating the conflict, and about Hamas officials openly urging Palestinians to run into buildings about to be targeted to be human shields, they have no qualms hyping the resulting casualty figures to criticize Israel. ... Last week, PA President Mahmoud Abbas wondered what Hamas was "trying to achieve" given that Palestinians "are the losing side, and every minute there are more and more unnecessary deaths. I don't like trading in Palestinian blood." For that, Hamas officials blasted Abbas for being "a criminal" and "a Likud member."

Obama administration’s weasel words contribute to Middle East instability. By Jennifer Rubin
Excerpt: From the beginning of the latest Gaza war, the call for “mutual restraint” and for both sides to “de-escalate” has been preposterous. Up until the day its major offensive was launched, Israel pursued a cease-fire. Even now, there is only one side escalating and refusing to show restraint. Joel Gulhane, a writer from Daily News Egypt, reports that Hamas rejected a cease-fire proposal from Turkey and Egypt

Armed security at Hamden mosque worries worshipers
Excerpt: When Sayyid Abdur-Rahman visits the Abdul-Majid Karim Hasan Islamic Center, he goes to find peace and comfort. However, these days when Abudur-Rahman visits his place of worship, he feels conflicted. That’s because armed security guards at the Islamic center are allegedly using their firearms to stand behind old ways of thinking in the place of worship. “There’s a sickness going on with this thing,” Abdur-Rahman said. (I didn't know what to expect here, but the article starts as an internal dispute and continues by trying to incite discussion on bringing weapons to houses of worship. It ignores the elephant in the room: we license Muslims to carry guns? --GS)

Mombasa: Muslim businessman accused of terror links killed
Excerpt: Mohamed Shahid Butt was driving back from the airport on Friday evening when his car was blocked by another vehicle and two gunmen opened fire. Mr Butt was due to appear in court next month charged with funding the radicalisation of Muslim youth. On the coast near Mombasa there has been a string of killings of people associated with Islamic extremism.

Anti-Israel protesters trap hundreds in Paris synagogue
Excerpt: But clashes erupted at the end of the march on Bastille Square, with people throwing projectiles onto a cordon of police who responded with tear gas. The unrest was continuing early Sunday evening. Media reports said that hundreds of Jews were trapped inside a synagogue in the area and police units were sent to rescue them.

Excerpt: A US judge sentenced an elderly Pakistani-American to 18 years to life in prison Wednesday for murdering his wife in New York after she refused to cook him a goat supper.
Noor Hussain, 75, was convicted of second degree murder for killing Nazar in April 2011 as she lay in bed in their Brooklyn apartment after subjecting her to years of abuse. ... He maintained she “disrespected” him by swearing and believed he was entitled to “discipline” his wife of 21 years. (The real "War on Women" liberals ignore in the name of multiculturalism. ~Bob)

Putin Belittles Obama by Praising Israel
Excerpt: Putin is enjoying making Obama look like a fool. Check it out: “President Vladimir Putin of Russia said, Thursday, that he was closely following events in Israel. Referring to the Protective Edge campaign against rocket attacks originating in Gaza, Putin told rabbis from Israel and Europe, ‘I support Israel’s struggle, which is intended to protect its citizens.’”

Excerpt: “Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The last hour would not come unless the Muslims will fight against the Jews and the Muslims would kill them until the Jews would hide themselves behind a stone or a tree and a stone or a tree would say: Muslim, or the servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me; come and kill him; but the tree Gharqad would not say, for it is the tree of the Jews.” (Sahih Muslim 6985) “Egyptian Cleric Al-Zoghbi Discusses the Annihilation of the Jews on Judgment Day,” MEMRI, n.d.:
