Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for October 25, 2012

Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for October 25, 2012
Robert A. Hall
Your one-stop-shop for political news and opinion. Please forward to friends who need to be informed. This SitRep (Military for “Situation Report”) is created by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I would have likely missed or skipped. And I can only spend at most three hours a night pulling stuff, plus the healthcare or economic stuff that crosses my desk at work. As always, I—and you—owe them thanks and appreciation. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the information presented, which is the responsibility of the author. I try not to post things that are false, or too far a stretch, regardless of the view point, but I don’t always succeed. As always on the Net, or in the legacy media, you must read critically and with skepticism.

Will Third Debate Change the Electoral Math?
Excerpt: Not all of the states in this Toss-Up column are equal. Most private polls show Romney with low single-digit leads in North Carolina and Virginia. For the sake of argument, let’s give Romney both states, adding 28 additional electoral votes to the 191 that Romney already led in, for a total of 219--51 short of a victory. At the same time, Obama has a lead in Nevada that is wider than any advantage that Romney has in North Carolina and Virginia, so let’s add the Silver State’s six electoral votes to the Obama 237, bringing his total to 243, 27 short of 270. That leaves six remaining states--Colorado (9), Florida (29), Iowa (6), New Hampshire (4), Ohio (18), and Wisconsin (10)--with a total of 76; Obama needs 27 of the 76 while Romney needs 51. (This is the reason we keep telling you folks to work hard. We can’t win without it. Ron P.)

Excerpt: MTV will interview President Obama for a live half-hour special to air on the MTV channels Friday at 5 PM. MTV correspondent Sway Calloway will interview Obama in the White House, while Andrew Jenks will be at a nearby college campus watching with young voters. Jenks will also host an online discussion before and after the interview. (I hope Mitt can smell the ambush here. You know they will select softball questions for Obama, hostile ones for him. Just the leftist entertainment industry pitching in for their candidate. How about the same format run by Fox News? Be a lot more “Fair and Balanced.” ~Bob.)

Worth Reading: Gauging the Perception of Cronyism in the United States. By Daniel J. Smith, Daniel Sutter
Excerpt: Cronyism is ubiquitous across all political systems. Whenever political actors intervene in economic affairs, they provide the incentive for businesses to take legal (cronyism) and/or illegal (corruption) action to ensure that political actors intervene in their favor. … Yet profit seeking will not serve consumers if businesses can secure from government monopoly privileges or other regulations inhibiting their competitors. Such a mixed or politicized economic system has been dubbed crony capitalism, or cronyism, to distinguish it from a system of free markets and limited government.

Death Race Damascus: “13 days in October.” By Douglas J. Hagmann
Excerpt: How will our great-grandchildren’s history books recount the events leading up to World War III and the great culling of the earth’s population that resulted? While I hope that this question never has to be answered, it is with that level of urgency that I write this report. First, I believe some historical context will be beneficial for an accurate understanding of our current situation.
Libya Attack Emails: White House Told Of Militant Claim 2 Hours After Benghazi attack

Excerpt: Officials at the White House and State Department were advised two hours after attackers assaulted the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11 that an Islamic militant group had claimed credit for the attack, official emails show. (I believe that Obama made a judgment call that there was more political risk in a firefight if help was sent than in letting four Americans die. ~Bob.)

Reuters: White House, State Dep’t received e-mails within two hours of Benghazi attack about jihadi group taking credit. By Errol Phillips
Excerpt: What we didn’t know until now is that the White House Situation Room got a heads up on whodunnit early enough that Chris Stevens may well have still been alive at the time. And for sure the President knew at that time. Can you just imagine Obama and his Team sitting around the Situation Room planning on how to cover up the episode from the get-go. What’s worse they did absolutely nothing to try to render aid and assistance to Americans under attack on American Soil.

White House told of militant claim two hours after Libya attack: emails
Excerpt: Officials at the White House and State Department were advised two hours after attackers assaulted the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11 that an Islamic militant group had claimed credit for the attack, official emails show. (No, Mr. President, Benghazi won’t simply go away. No doubt we’ll now be told Reuters is working for the Republicans. The simple fact is the administration either lied and got caught or is hopelessly inept. Either way, they need to be fired and replaced. Throughout my long and borderline evil life, I’ve often said “Better the devil you know….” In this case, it’s got to be hard for anyone to believe the “new devil” will be either as bad or as INCOMPETENT as the old one. And, by the way, I got the link to this story from left-leaning Daily Beast. --Ron P.)

Obama’s Benghazi Investigator: An Iran Sympathizer. By Matthew Vadum
Excerpt: The freshly appointed chairman of a federal investigation into the Benghazi massacre is an apologist for Islamic terrorism who has a cozy relationship with Iran, the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.

Excerpt: Health care isn’t free. It has a social cost. Someone has to choose between health care and other uses of money — deciding, for example, whether a procedure is worth the sacrifice of other goods and services that it would require. Who should make these decisions? Under what circumstances do we want the decisions to be made by patients? When should they be made by insurance pools? And when should they be made by government?

Sharia courts ‘as consensual as rape’, House of Lords told
Excerpt: Rulings by informal religious “councils” and tribunals are sometimes no more “consensual” than rape, peers were told. The warnings came in the first ever full Parliamentary debate on the subject in the UK.

Excerpt: If there are two things that those in the entertainment industry are always ready to promote, it’s public education and the sanctity of unions. In truth, however, none of them have their kids in public school. If they even thought about it, their friends and colleagues in the industry would accuse them of child abuse. Speaking of education, I found it fascinating that in a recent poll, 93% of Chicago’s public school teachers rated themselves superior or excellent.

A Vote for Every Murderer and a Ballot for Every Rapist. By Daniel Greenfield
Excerpt: The only reason that anyone in the Democratic Party still pays attention to the NAACP is voter turnout. In the last few years, the NAACP has shamelessly mortgaged its history to vocally defend voter fraud and attack any voter ID measure as the return of the firehoses and colored water fountains. While the NAACP required a photo ID to access its convention, asking as much of the voter was held to be just as bad as segregation, slavery and Spike Lee movies.

Let Detroit Go Bankrupt? It Already Has. By Daniel Flynn
Excerpt: Detroit has just been named the most dangerous city in America. This is the fourth consecutive year that Forbes has bestowed the dishonor upon the Motor City. A few years back, the Bay Area Center for Voting Research named Detroit the most liberal city in America. If you believe the two listings are mere coincidence, I have a domed stadium in Pontiac to sell you. Detroit proves that liberalism is hazardous to your health.

On Nov. 6th I'm The Boss
Excerpt: The other afternoon I received my early voting ballot in the mail. I was eager to receive it. On November 6th they'll run my ballot through the scanner and I will have taken a stake in our nation's future. On that day I am as powerful as Barack Obama or Mitt Romney or George Clooney. And every time I mark that ballot I think back on my 22 years of military service and know that I had some small role in insuring Americans can still go to the polls and exercise their free choices.

President Obama's 11th-hour strategy shift
Excerpt: Instead, the pressure is now on Obama to prove himself — and oh so late in the game. That led his campaign on Tuesday to release a detailed, bullet-point plan for his second term — a formal agenda his team had long resisted despite appeals from the likes of Bill Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and James Carville, and an army of basic-cable liberals, who said the president needed to spend less time cutting down Romney and more time elevating himself.
Massachusetts Democratic Senate Candidate Warren Received No-Bid Contract from Clinton DOJ. By Bill McMorris
Massachusetts Democratic senate candidate Elizabeth Warren garnered a lucrative no-bid contract with the Clinton administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) one year after advising then-First Lady Hillary Clinton. The Department paid Warren, a Harvard professor, $90,000 for serving as an expert witness over a five month period in 1999 and 2000, documents show. That is an “oddly” large sum given the short time frame and the hourly pay rate DOJ pays witnesses, according to University of Minnesota law professor Richard Painter.

Disdain is the stain on Obama By Michael Goodwin
Excerpt: Every time President Obama mocked, personally attacked and sneered at Mitt Romney, I kept wondering why so many Americans say they like Obama even as they don’t like his policies. How do you like a president who shows utter contempt for his opponent? How do you like a president who responds to criticism of his record with a snide blast at his opponent’s personal wealth?

Team O’s Jewish woes--Debate exposed an obvious fear. By John Podhoretz
Excerpt: He wants them to think he believes Israel is “our greatest ally in the region” when only a few months ago he had described it merely as “one of our allies in the region.” He wants them to think he’s responsible for “unprecedented military and intelligence cooperation” with Israel when in fact he’s merely continued his predecessor’s policies.

4 Children Killed in Afghanistan Firefight
Excerpt: A firefight that raged for an hour between international forces and the Taliban in eastern Afghanistan killed four children who were in the area grazing their sheep and goats, local officials said.

Obama wants interview, plea for Iowa endorsement to be kept hidden. By Neil Munro
Excerpt: President Barack Obama wants the Des Moines Register to endorse his 2012 bid, but he also wants his interview with the newspaper’s top staff to be kept hidden from the public. The newspaper’s editor, Rick Green, is now openly asking the president to put his 30-minute Oct. 23 interview on the record so that it can be seen by Iowa’s voters. (Romney’s interview is public. But what do you expect from “the most transparent administration in history”? ~Bob.)

Obama predicts debt deal, immigration reform in second term
Caved. ~Bob. Excerpt: The Obama administration reversed course Wednesday and allowed the Des Moines Register to release an interview with Obama that had previously been off-the-record. Obama gave the interview as he pursued the influential swing-state paper's endorsement.

Excerpt: Sometimes the law just gets in the way. The Obama Administration hasn’t needed Congress to enact new regulations on the Internet, businesses, energy production, and religious institutions. It has used its power to give struggling labor unions a new edge. It has granted amnesty to illegal immigrants. This blatant disregard for the law—and unilateral creation of new laws—is documented in a detailed new report from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA).

Guilford Co. voters say ballot cast for Romney came up Obama on machine
Funny how “machine errors” always go their way. It’s The Chicago Way. Show me your shocked face. ~Bob. Excerpt: Guilford County Board of Elections Director George Gilbert says the problem arises every election. It can be resolved after the machine is re-calibrated by poll workers. “It’s not a conspiracy it’s just a machine that needs to be corrected,” Gilbert said.

Worth Reading: What You Can't Say. By Walter E. Williams
Excerpt: Hubbard's observation reminded me of my 1972 job interview at the University of Massachusetts. During a reception, one of the Marxist professors asked me what I thought about the relationship between capitalism and slavery. My response was that slavery has existed everywhere in the world, under every political and economic system, and was by no means unique to capitalism or the United States. Perturbed by my response, he asked me what my feelings were about the enslavement of my ancestors. I answered that slavery is a despicable violation of human rights but that the enslavement of my ancestors is history, and one of the immutable facts of history is that nothing can be done to change it. (I didn’t know that Dr. Williams had applied to my alma mater. I graduated from U-Mass with a degree in PolSci in June of 1972, and was elected to the Massachusetts Senate in November—by a margin of nine votes—in a district that last elected a Republican in 1938. I could have told him that it was a bastion of leftist thought and transnational progressivism. The motto of most universities is “Be Politically Correct or Perish.” They are one of the reasons our Republic is very likely to perish. ~Bob.)

Important: October PMIs Suggest Euro Zone Downturn Deepening
Excerpt: Euro zone businesses in October suffered their worst month since the bloc emerged from its last recession more than three years ago, forcing them to cut more jobs to reduce costs, surveys showed on Wednesday. The downturn that began in smaller periphery countries is now gripping Germany and France, dragging the euro zone as a whole deeper into the quagmire. (In WWII Budapest, it is reported that the Nazis [doubtless to the approbation of their Islamic admirers] would line up Jews who were chained together on a bridge over the Danube. They would shoot the more fortunate one on the end, who would fall into the river, dragging the others to their drowning deaths one by one. The world economy has the prudent countries chained to the feckless, and ultimately to other economies, eventually to Greece, Spain, Ireland, and the rest of the EU disaster states. In the US, prosperous states, like Texas and North Dakota, are chained to disaster states like California and Illinois. It’s hard to see how their collapse doesn’t drag the rest of us into the abyss with them. We are, I fear, close to fiscal collapse, followed by political and social collapsed. ~Bob.)

Worth Reading: Possibly 200 Million Girls Missing Due to Sex-Selection Abortion. By Jessica Prol
Excerpt: Marie Smith, Executive Director at the Parliamentary Network for Critical Issues stated the case as follows: “Sex selection abortion is the beginning of gendercide. Sex selection abortion considers the lives of the youngest of females to be without worth or value. (The real “War on Women” by progressive ideas. ~Bob.)

Senate Control May Hinge on Presidential Race
Excerpt: The battle for the Senate is remarkably close, and control could end up being determined by the outcome of the presidential contest. As things stand today, Republicans look reasonably positioned to net two to three seats in the upper chamber. Two is sufficient for Democrats to retain their majority, by the slimmest of margins. Three is enough for Mitch McConnell to become Senate majority leader, if Mitt Romney wins the presidency. (I fear we’ve lost MO and maybe ID, due to candidate statements. Can’t just pick the most conservative candidate—need the most conservative candidate who can win. ~Bob.)

Holtz-Eakin: Health law will hurt innovation, ration care
Excerpt: The cost-control panel created by President Obama's healthcare law could move Medicare "dangerously close to a rationed system," conservative economist Douglas Holtz-Eakin says in a new policy analysis. Holtz-Eakin, a former Congressional Budget Office director who was the chief domestic policy adviser to John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign, is taking aim at the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB).

RNC Web ad mocks Obama over 'Big Bird, binders and bayonets'
Excerpt: A new Web ad from the Republican National Committee (RNC) depicts the president as desperate and lashing out with attacks over "Big Bird, binders and bayonets" as the GOP looks to position presidential nominee Mitt Romney as the candidate in the driver's seat with less than two weeks to go before Election Day.

Excerpt: Set for a prime-time debut on Nov. 4 on the National Geographic Channel, and a release the next day on Netflix, the film — “SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden” — is being backed by Harvey Weinstein, a longtime Democratic contributor and one of the Obama campaign’s most vigorous backers. Mr. Weinstein bought the rights to the film for about $2.5 million at the Cannes festival in May…

Weinstein Bin Laden Film Cast Romney As Villian. By Joel B. Pollak
The New York Times reveals today--in a classic buried lede--that Harvey Weinstein's film about the killing of Osama bin Laden, set to air on the National Geographic Channel two days before the election, originally included a scene showing Gov. Mitt Romney "appearing to oppose the raid," a complete fabrication of history. The film, SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden, grants President Barack Obama a "starring role," and was edited--apparently at Weinstein's suggestion--to embellish Obama's involvement: (Airing Nov 4…timing not political…Barb.)

Among Americans in Israel, More Forceful Backing for Romney
Excerpt: Americans living in Israel went to the polls this week, dropping sealed envelopes into improvised ballot boxes at community centers in this city and at other locations around the country. Instead of a unifying experience, though, participating in the November presidential elections from afar seemed to accentuate the distance between the American Jewish voters here and those back in the United States. Planned Parenthood Caught Lying About Its Botched Abortions
Excerpt: Live Action has released a new undercover video today showing officials with the Planned Parenthood abortion business lying about how women have been victimized by botched abortions at its centers. (Just trying to fulfill their founder’s dream of keeping the “unfit” [read “blacks’] from being born. Now, of course, the “unfit” includes girl babies. ~Bob.)

Excerpt: Have you ever laid in bed awake at night with a knot in your stomach because you didn’t know how your family was possibly going to make it through the next month financially? Have you ever felt the desperation of not being able to provide the basic necessities for your family even though you tried as hard as you could? All over America tonight, there are millions of desperate families that are being ripped apart by this economy.

NHS death rates four times higher than US
Excerpt: Patients having major surgery in NHS hospitals face a much higher risk of dying than those in America, research has revealed. Doctors found that people who have treatment here are four times more likely to die than US citizens undergoing similar operations. The most seriously ill NHS patients were seven times more likely to die than their American counterparts.

City of Springfield gives up on Obama/Biden bill
Excerpt: Springfield’s budget director says the city is out of options to be reimbursed for expenses associated with hosting then-Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign stop in the fall of 2008. (Once a deadbeat, always a deadbeat. ~Bob.)

Excerpt: If you bet Donald Trump’s “October Surprise revelation” would be “nothing,” then congratulations. After days of coy hints and fanfare, Trump revealed that he has no news to share, but promised to donate $5 million to Obama’s favorite charity if the president releases his college records:

Romney campaign sign set ablaze in Loudoun
Excerpt: For months, Loudoun County has been counted among the nation’s most hotly contested battlegrounds in the presidential election. As Nov. 6 draws closer, political tension in Leesburg has continued to mount: Campaign yard signs have been stolen, vandalized and – most recently – set on fire. About 2 a.m. Monday, Leesburg residents Jack and Libby Stevens awoke to the sound of their dogs barking, and quickly saw that their large 4-by-8-foot sign supporting Republican candidate Mitt Romney was ablaze in the front yard. Excerpt: “With all due respect to those at DOD, it is clear that the attack on Fort Hood was a terrorist attack,” Scott said. “To classify this terrible tragedy as ‘workplace violence’ is not only counterintuitive to the details we know regarding this case, but is a slap in the face to the victims.”
