Old Jarhead's Political SitRep for September 17, 2012

Your one-stop-shop for political news and opinion. Please forward to friends who need to be informed. This SitRep (Military for “Situation Report”) is created by many readers who send me items for inclusion, which I would have likely missed or skipped. And I can only spend at most three hours a night pulling stuff, plus the healthcare or economic stuff that crosses my desk at work. As always, I—and you—owe them thanks and appreciation. I post articles because I think they are of interest and will stimulate thought and discussion. Doing so doesn’t mean that I necessarily agree (or disagree) with every—or any—opinion in the posted article, or that I was able to verify the information presented, which is the responsibility of the author. I try not to post things that are false, or too far a stretch, regardless of the view point, but I don’t always succeed. As always on the Net, or in the legacy media, you must read critically and with skepticism.

My Granddaughter's 12th birthday was this past weekend, so she had a sleepover at our condo, with six 10-to-12-year-old girls running around until four AM. My ears are still bleeding. Happy to get a few quiet hours pulling e-mails Sunday evening. ~Bob.

Where do you see America four years from now?
Guest post from a Marine Vietnam vet.

Worth Reading: Disgrace in Benghazi: And a dying superpower’s blundering response. By Mark Steyn
Excerpt: So, on a highly symbolic date, mobs storm American diplomatic facilities and drag the corpse of a U.S. ambassador through the streets. Then the president flies to Vegas for a fundraiser. No, no, a novelist would say; that’s too pat, too neat in its symbolic contrast. Make it Cleveland, or Des Moines. The president is surrounded by delirious fanbois and fangurls screaming “We love you,” too drunk on his celebrity to understand this is the first photo-op in the aftermath of a national humiliation. (Mark Steyn comes down hard on the murder of our ambassador and what it means, and how incredibly poorly the response of the Prez and others has been. He expresses some of the deep anger every American should feel about this atrocity, and secondarily about the sad excuse for a proper response. --Del)

The Problem Is?

Long-awaited 'Furious' report places blame on ATF, Justice
Excerpt: Dozens of senior-level U.S. government officials turned a blind eye to public safety as they pursued an ill-conceived and poorly managed investigation into gun trafficking in Mexico, according to a long-awaited inspector general's report on Operation Fast and Furious. (Fox has some sections of it, and the finger pointing has started. Heads will roll, of course, but will t hey be all the right ones? Or will it be the lower down guys taking the heat while the upper level managers who really have responsibility get to skate? --Del)

Worth Reading: Che Guevara in Chicago. By Humberto Fontova
Excerpt: You just knew Che Guevara would show up as an icon of the union demonstrators in Chicago. …Che Guevara outlawed trade unions. Then-- at Soviet gun-point-- he herded all recalcitrant Cuban union-members into forced-labor camps and sent their rebellious union-leaders to the firing squad.

Che and the EPA. By Phil Kerpen
Excerpt: On September 13, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sent an internal email to its staff under the subject line "Hispanic Heritage Month." The email, obtained by The Weekly Standard magazine, featured a picture of infamous communist butcher Che Guevara with the slogan "hasta la victoria siempre," or "on to victory, always."

Losing the Middle East. By Bill Tatro
Excerpt: The so-called excuse was that German diplomat Ernst vom Rath had been assassinated in Paris, France on November 7th, 1938 by Herschel Grynszpan, a German-born Polish Jew. Shortly thereafter, on November 9th and 10th, a series of brutal and coordinated Nazi attacks were carried out on Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues.

Source: This Is How Islamists Knew Of Secret U.S. Safehouse. BAaron Klein
Excerpt: An Egyptian security official speaking to WND today said there is information about large-scale infiltration by al-Qaida and its affiliated Jihadia Salafiya groups within the Libyan security apparatus. The claim comes amid speculation about how Islamists who targeted the U.S. mission in Libya seemed to have inside information about the movement of the American diplomats in the country as well as the location of a supposedly secret U.S. safehouse in Libya.

Excerpt: Well, yesterday we learned from Federal Reserve Chief Bernanke that he plans to pump another $40 billion dollars into the U.S. economy to try and ease that horrendous 8.2 percent unemployment rate and make an effort to boost this stagnant economy. The Wall Street guys call this QE3...the 3 designating the 3rd Fed effort to stimulate the American economy by printing more worthless dollars. Bernanke feels safe in doing this since the new America has so little knowledge about how economies work.

Principal Sees Racism in Peanut Butter. By Todd Starnes
Excerpt: An Oregon grade school principal suggested in a newspaper interview that peanut butter and jelly sandwiches might be racially and culturally offensive. “What about Somali or Hispanic students who might not eat sandwiches?” Verenice Gutierrez told the Portland Tribune.

Taliban 'Targeted Prince Harry' On Base: Two US Marines die in an attack on Camp Bastion, but a senior Taliban commander tells Sky News Prince Harry was the target.
Excerpt: A Taliban commander has told Sky News that Prince Harry was the primary target of an attack on a major Allied military base in Afghanistan. Two US Marines died and several others were hurt when militants launched the attack on Camp Bastion late Friday. Prince Harry was more than a mile away with other crew members of the Apache attack helicopters when the attack took place, sources said.

Australia: Muslim protesters chanting "Allahu akbar" turn violent, spit at police -- sign: "Behead all those who insult the prophet"
Didn’t get the “Islam is a Religion of Peace” memo. ~Bob

State Department official: Egypt aid not in jeopardy, though US having 'frank' talks
No wonder they despise us as weaklings. ~Bob.

Tunisia: Three dead, 28 wounded as Muslims attack U.S. embassy
Excerpt: Don't be concerned: the Vast Majority of Peaceful Muslims is just blocks away from the embassy now, and just about to put a stop to the actions of their violent coreligionists. The count of the dead and wounded comes from this Reuters/DPA report

Enraged Muslims protest worldwide, demanding end to free speech
Love the pictures of members of “The Religion of Peace.” ~Bob

Tunisia: Muslims chanting "Obama, Obama, we are all Osamas" set fire to U.S. school
Sometimes, the headline is all you need. Who could have predicted the “democratic Arab Spring” would turn out this way. Okay, me among hundreds, but no one in power. ~Bob.

Kuwait: Muslims demonstrate at U.S. embassy, chant "Obama, we are all Osama," demand respect and expulsion of U.S. ambassador

"Listen, listen Obama, we are all Osama" -- Lebanon: One killed as Muslims march from mosque, stone police, set fire to KFC

"Obama, Obama, we are all Osama." "USA, go to hell."
This is the result of Obama's foreign policy of reaching out to Muslim countries. The chant on the streets of Cairo and elsewhere in the Arab and Muslim world: "Obama, Obama, we are all Osama." "USA, go to hell." The notion that an offensive film was the cause of the violence is nonsense. Islamist forces in those countries are on the lookout for any pretext to organize violent mobs on the streets and arm them. The new authorities in the countries of the Arab Spring are only too happy to abet and ignore violence against the US to gain their favor or because that is their tacit policy. The Administration has been unprepared to meet this threat. Remember, earlier this year an Egyptian Islamist mob stormed the Israeli embassy in Cairo. It took some strong arming by the Administration to get the Egyptian government to end the attack. Given this experience and intelligence about the growing influence of Islamists in those countries, why were we not prepared? Why had we not put those governments on notice? Why are we not ending aid, or at least making it conditional, to countries that in every possible way are not our friends? We are paying protection money to bad, if not rogue, states that have nothing to offer us except the possibility of participation in the suppression of Islamist terrorist groups that threaten us. If they don't, can't or are unwilling to do this, we would be better off keeping the money or funding elements of those societies that desire more internally focused, non jihadist governments. Cordially. Larry Greenberg

"US Embassy Zings Egypt, Via Twitter: Psst, we can read Arabic, too," by John Johnson
Excerpt: The US embassy in Cairo caught the ruling Muslim Brotherhood being two-faced as the protests were under way earlier this week, reports the Hill. The Egypt group's Arabic feed praised the protests, while its American feed expressed support for American staffers:

Islamophobia averted in UK: Muslim who threatened to slit pregnant girlfriend's throat unless she converted to Islam is spared jail
Excerpt: The world breathes a collective sigh of relief as Britain heads off a case of "bigotry" and allows a Muslim who threatened to murder his girlfriend unless she converted to Islam to get off scot-free, as he of course should have in today's lovely multicultural society.

Sudan protesters set fire to German embassy
Excerpt: Sudanese demonstrators broke into the German embassy in Khartoum on Friday, raising an Islamic flag and setting the building on fire in a protest against a film that demeaned the Prophet Mohammad, witnesses said.

Obama: Detention OK for 1st Amendment 'activities'
http://www.wnd.com/2012/09/obama-detention-ok-for-1st-amendment-activities/
Excerpt: Faster than he can play a round of golf, Obama had his attorneys file an appeal to a judge's permanent injunction against enforcement of Section 1021 of the most recent National Defense Authorization Act. The judge declared unconstitutional the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens who are "guilty" of no more than exercising protected First Amendment rights.

CALLING ALL AMERICA-BASHERS: From the Fabulous Weaselzippers.us: Muslim Brotherhood Praises Anti-American Protests on Arabic Twitter Feed, Feigns Support for Embassy Staff on English Feed...

IT'S A LANDSLIDE: The Empty Chair is Losing. By William L. Gensert
http://losangelescitycollege.blogspot.com/2012/09/its-landslide-empty-chair-is-losing-by.html
Excerpt: President Obama is headed to defeat in November, and it won't be close. Forget about the polls, and forget about the cadre of delusional Democrats who can't stop telling us how great
and successful the last three and a half years have been. Slick Willy can shill all he likes, but seriously, he's preaching to the choir, because the only ones believing his shtick are bought and paid for sycophants, crony capitalists, and members of the mainstream media.

The United States of America: The All-Purpose Bogey-Man. By Jim Geraghty
http://www.nationalreview.com/campaign-spot/316832/obamas-mistake-much-bigger-ally-gaffe#
Excerpt: We cannot be the all-purpose bogeyman in the political rhetoric of states that claim to want to be our friends, a convenient caricature for regime spokesmen to trot out when they need to distract
from their own failures. The demonization of America is so pervasive in Egyptian media it even percolated freely in the English-language press under Mubarak. No one’s asking foreign governments to shut down voices critical of America; just to refute the lies and stand up for our reputations, to stop letting us be the perpetual villain in all of their political discussions.

Romney Is Right: Suddenly it’s wrong to articulate a foreign policy different from Obama’s? By Rich Lowry
Excerpt: When a U.S. embassy gets stormed by protesters overseas, it’s usually a matter of public concern. And it might even occasion debate between presidential candidates.
Unless one of the candidates is President Barack Obama and the other is Mitt Romney. Then, everything changes.

Worth Reading: The Abandonment: Not since its birth has Israel been so cast adrift by its closest ally. By Charles Krauthammer
Excerpt: What is incoherent is President Obama’s position. He declares the Iranian program intolerable — “I do not have a policy of containment; I have a policy to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon” — yet stands by as Iran rapidly approaches nuclearization.

Obama’s ‘proud’ statements on changing US image may backfire. By Jeremy Herb
Excerpt: President Obama has said that elevating the image of the United States around the world was one of his proudest foreign policy accomplishments, but those remarks could boomerang and hamper his reelection bid. The violence and anti-American protests throughout the Middle East are bringing fresh attacks on the president’s foreign policies as Muslim rage is intensifying in the region.

When Is a Religion not a Religion? When its adherents will not rest until Sharia rules humanity. By Michael Rulle
Excerpt: Hillary Clinton has managed to stay out of the limelight these last four years. Her image and approval rating had been pretty high. The media and most of the public have assumed she has been doing a good job.
Excerpt: Instead of questioning President Barack Obama about the intelligence and security failures that led to the deaths of four diplomatic personnel in Libya Tuesday, the media has focused its ire on a California private citizen. (A scathing review of how the media have mishandled the whole Middle East murder subject here. --Del)

Sixteen Reasons Why Islam Is Not the Religion of Peace. By James Arlandson
Excerpt: Islam is not the religion of peace. The following sixteen reasons, all sourced from the original sacred documents (the Quran and Traditions), classical law, and history, tell us why.

Obama Flashback: The Day I’m Inaugurated Muslim Hostility will Cease
Excerpt: Then-Senator Barack Obama makes the case for an Obama Presidency on November 21, 2007 by saying he is uniquely qualified to bring stability to America’s relationships in the Muslim world because he lived in an Islamic country during his youth and his half-sister is Muslim.

Excerpt: It would now seem that the Obama/Pelosi/Reid regime, and the entire liberal electorate, have now succeeded in being able to re-direct the national conversation on any issue toward the demonization of anyone who clings to moral or constitutional principles.

Teen held in 'jihad' terrorist plot to bomb Chicago bar
Didn't get the memo here in Chicago. ~Bob. Excerpt: A Hillside teenager has been charged with trying to detonate a car bomb outside a bar in downtown Chicago, following months of surveillance in which he boasted to undercover federal agents of ignoring reprimands from a mosque leader against plans for terrorism, the U.S. attorney's office announced.

Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia calls for international criminalization of insults to prophets
Excerpt: This is what the violence and protests are all about. This is what the goal is. There will be more and more calls like this in the coming days. (Of course, since they get to decide what is an insult, it could be a crime to walk your dog on the street near Muslims, or have a cross on your church. ~Bob.)

A Cool-Headed Climate Conversation With Aerospace Legend Burt Rutan
Excerpt: I was shocked to find that there were actually climate scientists who wouldn’t share the raw data, but would only share their conclusions in summary graphs that were used to prove their various theories about planet warming. In fact I began to smell something really bad, and the worse that smell got, the deeper I looked. (...) Tragically, policymakers have thrown horrendous amounts of taxpayer money needed for other purposes at solving an unsubstantiated emergency. It is scandalous that so many climate scientists who fully knew that Al Gore had no basis for his irresponsible claims stood mute. (Burt Rutan is widely acknowledged as one of the greats in the Aerpspace industy and is especially known for his ability to find the right data from among the cloud of possibility and make the best choices based on it. Ron P.)

Insurgents wore US uniforms attacking British air base in Afghanistan, coalition officials say
Excerpt: Coalition military authorities in Afghanistan say the insurgents who attacked a British airfield in southwestern Afghanistan on Friday, killing two U.S. Marines, wore U.S. Army uniforms and destroyed six Harrier fighter jets.

Yuma Harrier jets, Marine felled in Afghanistan
Excerpt: ISAF personnel fired on the attackers and killed all but one, who was wounded and is being held in a medical facility. The base was secured early Saturday morning, military officials said. (But they said Prince Harry was never in any danger, so all is well. --MasterGuns)

Excerpt: The State Department told reporters Friday afternoon that it won’t answer any more questions about the Sept. 11 attack on the consulate in Benghazi that killed four Americans until the investigation into the incident is complete. “I’m going to frustrate all of you, infinitely, by telling you that now that we have an open FBI investigation on the death of these four Americans, we are not going to be in a position to talk at all about what the U.S. government may or may not be learning about how any of this happened — not who they were, not how it happened, not what happened to Ambassador Stevens, not any of it — until the Justice Department is ready to talk about the investigation that’s its got,” State Department spokeswoman Victorian Nuland told reporters late Friday afternoon.

A Time For Choosing: Sharia Or The Constitution!!! By Roger Kimball
Excerpt: When the motor of history gets revved up (as it surely is now), it becomes more than commonly difficult to discriminate between the mere static of events rubbing against one another and that appoggiatura that announces the main theme of the moment.
You’d have to be pretty thick not to sense that something big is happening in the world. Just yesterday, the Evening Standard published a column of mine in which I reprised James Carville’s famous taunt, “It’s the economy, stupid.”

Obama Doctrine: Middle East Chaos, Soaring Oil Prices Spark Global Recession Fears. By Wynton Hall
Excerpt: The turmoil in the Middle East turmoil, the Federal Reserve's decision to further devalue the U.S. dollar through a third round of "quantitative easing" (QE3), and rising oil prices are combining to create a toxic economic brew that could send the global economy into recession. That was the assessment of International Energy Agency chief economist Fatih Birol. (Yes, plans are in place so that we will fondly remember the days when gas was only $4.10/gal….The US has been crippled and disabled from the inside out. His “Plan is working.” With MSM help, John Doe has yet to imagine the unimaginable…Barb)

Producer Of Anti-Islam Film Was Fed Snitch
Excerpt: In remarks stressing that the U.S. government had “absolutely nothing to do with” the anti-Islam film that has touched off violence in the Middle East, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton yesterday sought to quash Arab concerns that the “disgusting and reprehensible” movie was somehow produced or condoned by American officials. However, Clinton’s attempt to distance the U.S. from “Innocence of Muslims”–and, by extension, its felonious producer–may be complicated by the revelation that Nakoula Basseley Nakoula became a government informant after his 2009 arrest for bank fraud, The Smoking Gun has learned.

Ms Clinton Causes Islamic Radicals To Wet Their Trousers, From Laughter
Excerpt: The Muslim Brotherhood continues to impose Sharia and the Obama Administration acts as the facilitator and enabler. It is their purpose to impose Sharia on the free world and such statements by our Secretary of State makes that goal more of a reality.

ObamaEgypt and Israel : None Dare Call It Treason, 50 Years Later
Excerpt: And then there’s top White House aide Valerie Jarrett, who seems to run the White House. She is a leftistdescended from leftistslong associated with leftists--and as we have seen, the left veers toward the multicultural and towards a Fanon-esque romanticism of anti-Western violence. And, for what it’s worth, she was born in Iran

Muslims Killed Pastor for Showing ‘Jesus Film’ but no Media Outrage. By Gary DeMar
Excerpt: In 2003, Christian evangelist Hridoy Roy was murdered by a gang of eight men who attacked him at his home. The assailants stabbed Roy repeatedly after tying him “crucifixion style” to his bed. Roy was known for showing the popular “Jesus Film,” a word-for-word account from the book of Luke used for evangelism purposes worldwide.

Great ad if you haven't seen it

Don't Buy the Narrative! Muslim Mob Violence Was Not Caused by a Movie
Excerpt: So Carney's contradicting the undersecretary of state. He's contradicting the UK Independent and other sources quoted. "It wasn't planned. It's the movie." Clearly this guy's been told to go out there, "Jay, we don't care how bad it tastes, you tell 'em it's the movie.

Bernanke’s Quantitative Easing: Wrong Medicine for an Ailing Economy. By J.D. Foster, Ph.D.
Excerpt: The real problem with QE—beyond increased near-term uncertainty—is that the Fed must at some point unload all these bonds it has bought. The Fed will buy bonds in soft markets and sell them when interest rates are already rising, pushing interest rates up further, faster. The problem, in short, is that the Fed will have failed to prop up the economy when it was weak only to risk killing the recovery once it really takes off.

U.S. Aid to Egypt and Libya: Tight Strings Needed. By James Phillips
Excerpt: The Obama Administration is finalizing an aid package to Egypt that includes forgiving approximately $1 billion of Egypt’s debt to the United States. This is in addition to about $1.5 billion in annual U.S. foreign aid. However, the lax reaction of Egypt’s new Islamist government to the violent demonstrations at the U.S. embassy in Cairo has raised questions about the motivations of Egypt’s new Islamist leaders. Congress should monitor the Administration’s ongoing aid negotiations with Cairo and ensure that conditions are attached to any forthcoming aid that will advance U.S. national interests. (Reduce the deficit that much or give the $$ to our own military…Barb)

Terrorists Storm International Peacekeeping Base in Sinai: At least 3 hurt as dozens of armed Muslims storm the international peacekeeping force base in the Sinai Peninsula. By Elad Benari
Excerpt: At least three people were hurt on Friday as dozens of armed terrorists, affiliated with the Salafi movement of Islam, stormed the international peacekeeping force base in the Sinai Peninsula, near the Gaza-Israel border. They were protesting the controversial film mocking the prophet Mohammed which has resulted in protests throughout the Arab world.

Official: Obama Rejected Netanyahu's Request for 'Red Line.' Senior official says the divide between Obama and Netanyahu in Iran has deepened after their phone conversation this week. By Elad Benari
Obama, the official told The New York Times, repeated the assurances he gave to Netanyahu in March that the United States would not allow Iran to manufacture a nuclear weapon. The president was unwilling to agree on any specific action by Iran, like reaching a defined threshold on nuclear material, or failing to adhere to a deadline on negotiations, that would lead to American military action. “We need some ability for the president to have decision-making room,” the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the delicacy of the talks, told The New York Times. …Israeli officials, however, say this guarantee may not be enough for Israel, which Iranian leaders have repeatedly threatened with annihilation. (Not in the Dem talking points being reiterated en masse on MSM. --Barb)

Langfan Challenges U.S. Senator Over Letter to Netanyahu
Excerpt: New York attorney Mark Langfan, a staunch supporter of Israel and a regular op-ed contributor to Arutz Sheva, challenged a U.S. Senator this week after she sent an angry letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. He received no response. On Wednesday, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, sent Netanyahu an angry letter in response to his comments that “those in the international community who refuse to place red lines before Iran have no moral right to place a red line before Israel.”

Excerpt: If one well-known Pakistani politician gets his way, international law will forbid “anti-Islam” material from the Internet. Friday afternoon, Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik wrote in a series of tweets that he has spoken with and written to the Secretary General of Interpol about enacting an international law to stop all anti-Islam propaganda online.

Excerpt: “From what we think we know, attacks in Benghazi were not about the weird Internet video which created the attacks in Egypt. The attacks in Benghazi appeared to have been a response to an American drone strike against an al-Qaida leader. And that drone strike wasn’t an anomaly.
