Old Jarhead's Political Sitrep for September 4, 2012

Formerly "Political Digest." (I decided to change the name when I saw there were too many "political digests" around. Some folks thought I was copying others when my readers and I were compiling this one. "SitRep" is military speak for "Situation Report.") Bringing you news and information the MSM is too busy covering American Idol, celebrity affairs and sensational missing person cases to cover. Please forward to friends who need to be informed.

Happy Labor Day: The McJob recovery. By Ed Morrissey
Excerpt: Eight years ago, when John Kerry tried to defeat the incumbent George W. Bush, he accused Bush of leading a “jobless recovery.” When the economy started creating hundreds of thousands of jobs, Kerry and the Democrats then claimed that Bush was creating mostly “McJobs,” low-wage positions rather than higher-paying jobs for people with significant skills. The nominal median income level rose in 2004, though, as jobs were created, and Bush ended up narrowly winning re-election.

Jobs report to nip at convention's heels
Excerpt: Ten hours after President Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination for reelection, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will toss a stink bomb into his post-convention party. The August jobs numbers are due out Friday morning, just as Obama will be seeking to capitalize on his convention momentum. The timing guarantees that Obama’s post-Charlotte, N.C., campaign swing to New Hampshire, Iowa and Florida will battle for headlines with the barometer of economic recovery.

Obama Surrogate Richardson: 'International Community Wants to See this President Reelected'
Excerpt: "The president is not running overseas, but everywhere you go, all around the world-- and I travel a lot -- the international community wants to see this president reelected. obviously, we've got to do it here," said Richardson. (Well that settles it. Apparently Governor Richardson believes that it doesn't matter if the American people don't want a president to be reelected. Just as long as the rest of the world, including those who hate this country, want Obama reelected, then it's our duty to abide by their wishes. --Masterguns)

They Have to Decide if They Want to be Liberal — or Unhinged. By Bernard Goldberg
Excerpt: First, there’s Old Reliable, Chris Matthews, the man who never lets you down when it comes to giving liberals a bad name. During the GOP National Convention he suggested that when Republicans link Barack Obama to Chicago politics – (wait for it!) — they’re being racist.

Quote from The Patriot Post
"The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can't get and to promise to give it to them." --American writer H.L. Mencken (1880-1956)

Worth Reading: Liberalism, as We Know It. By George Will
Excerpt: With Americans, on average, worth less and earning less than when he was inaugurated, Barack Obama is requesting a second term by promising, or perhaps threatening, that prosperity is just around the corner if he can practice four more years of trickle-down government. This is dubious policy, scattering borrowed money in the hope that this will fill consumers and investors with confidence. But recently Obama revealed remarkable ambitions for it when speaking in Pueblo, Colo., a pleasant place Democratic presidents should avoid.

Debt to reach $16 trillion in time to crash Democrats’ convention
Excerpt: Just as Democrats are gaveling in their convention Tuesday, the federal government likely will announce another dubious milestone — $16 trillion in total federal debt. (Bankrupt your Grandkids? Yes, we can! ~Bob.)

Obama Administration Passed Secret Message to Iran: U.S. Won’t Support Strike Against Iran
Excerpt: The Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot published a startling report Monday detailing a message it says was conveyed by the Obama administration – via two European countries – to Iranian officials. This would be hard to verify (over here) but speaks volumes about our support (or lack of it) of Israel if true. (There as a time when this would have been impossible to believe. Now? Who knows? ~Bob.)

Excerpt: This election year, millions of Americans will donate to the political candidates and initiatives of their choice at the local, state, and federal levels. But for unionized workers, union dues come out of their paychecks and go to political causes—and they aren't consulted on where that money will go. In July, The Wall Street Journal's Tom McGinty and Brody Mullins published an eye-opening report that "Organized labor spends about four times as much on politics and lobbying as generally thought."

Excerpt: President Barack Obama was a pioneering contributor to the national subprime real estate bubble, and roughly half of the 186 African-American clients in his landmark 1995 mortgage discrimination lawsuit against Citibank have since gone bankrupt or received foreclosure notices. As few as 19 of those 186 clients still own homes with clean credit ratings, following a decade in which Obama and other progressives pushed banks to provide mortgages to poor African Americans. (Tough for them, but since when do liberals care about results. Especially if being for the right things helps politically. ~Bob.)

Seven Devastating Economic Facts Affecting Black Americans. By Wynton Hall
Excerpt: The Obama economy has been brutal on all Americans, but especially so on black Americans. Consider the following seven economic facts: … Whether these depressing statistics will affect President Obama’s support among African American voters in November remains to be seen. However, a recent NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll found that Mitt Romney receives zero percent support among black voters.

Johnny Depp Flees France Over Tax Hikes. By Daniel J. Mitchell
Excerpt: I’m a bad person. I know it’s not nice to take joy in the misery of others, but I can’t help but smile when I see a story about bad news in France.
In my defense, this is not because of hostility to French people, who have always been friendly to me. Instead, France has become the global symbol of statism (particularly since Sweden has been moving in the right direction). The French, for instance, are increasingly infamous for class-warfare tax policy and onerous levels of intervention.

Excerpt: Harrisburg, Pa., leads the nation in a dubious distinction: It has the most debt per capita of any U.S. city. The town's 50,000 citizens are on the hook for $1.5 billion. (Hint: Not run by Republicans. ~Bob.)

Two U.S. consulate employees wounded in Pakistan bomb attack
Excerpt: Two Americans working for the U.S. consulate were wounded on Monday in a bomb attack on their vehicle in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, the American embassy said. The blast also wounded two Pakistani employees of the consulate, the embassy in Islamabad said in a statement.

Gibbs: Yeah, probably best not to expect ’08 levels of enthusiasm. By Erika Johnsen
Except: The enthusiasm gap is indeed already rearing it’s ugly head, and not in favor of Obama, either. ….But don’t worry, because Team Obama is assuring us that they’re still going to find enough enthusiastic DNC convention-goers to manage to completely fill up the gigantic football stadium to which President Obama was forced to confine his magnanimosity, ’cause otherwise… well, that would just be embarrassing. For weeks, Democrats have been concerned about filling Bank of America Stadium, home to the NFL’s Carolina Panthers. They feared a devastating image of an enthusiasm gap if Obama spoke to empty upper decks at the venue. (Wonder if the cost to bus all those “folks” in and feed them will equal the cost of taking the sand back to Myrtle Beach. --Barb.)

Me So Confused...Everything That Should Be Down Is Up, What Should Be Up Is Down, But The Guy Who Did It Deserves Re-Election? The Blog Of Michael P. Borgia
Excerpt: In one spurt of less than three months, the Code of Federal Regulations grew from 53,630 pages on September 10, 2011; to 75,770 pages on December 3, 2011. For the first time in our nation's history, we now must spend more than 120 million man hours just to comply with the contents of the code. That's nearly double what it took just one year ago. The amount of non productive energy wasted is however considered by our brilliant young president to be a good thing….

Terrorists Plotted to Attack Indian Nuke Plants
Excerpt: The Indian government has arrested more than a dozen terrorists in a sting operation from groups planning attacks on nuclear facilities.

Greedy Jew: Manhattan, NY - Brooklyn Orthodox Woman Tracks Down Pickpocketer, Nabs Thief Redhanded
Excerpt: “As we were waiting, she said to me ‘you have your stuff back, this is just a waste of time’”, recalled Mrs. Wohlhendler. “Then she took another tack saying, ‘I am Muslim, you are Jewish. You are all greedy, why can’t you just let it go?’” Upon their arrival, police immediately found inconsistencies in the suspect’s story, who first insisted that she hadn’t used the credit card, but store surveillance tapes indicated otherwise. (Why, in Obama's America, would a Muslim think a Jew wanting to keep her own money was greedy? ~Bob.)

Excerpt: This was the last active synagogue in Egypt. The Egyptian authorities’ excuse for the shut-down, effectively outlawing High Holiday services in the country, were “security” reasons. (Obama's Arab Spring friends, taking care of The Jewish Question. ~Bob.)

Obama- sand sculpture Mount Rushmore imitation
Excerpt: At the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Charlotte, they will have pictures of such American icons as the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore. Apparently President Obama has such a high opinion of himself that there is also a sand sculpture of him, erected at the DNC at the EpiCentre entertainment complex, seemingly in imitation of Mount Rushmore. It consists of 15 tons of sand trucked in from Myrtle BeachSouth Carolina….Let the jokes begin! Shovel ready job, house built on sand, no graven images, etc. ... Per author: Update: Looks like we raised a good question about the sand removal. The Morning Spew reports that back in 1998 the Army Corp of Engineers spent $60 million of public money to put sand back into the beach! (Reports are rain from Isaac is already affecting O’s sand sculpture. --Barb.)

Democrats Air Frustration With Obama’s ‘Cockiness’
Excerpt: Kantor's piece carries a long-running theme that Obama easily -- perhaps even uncontrollably -- rates and ranks others around him. ….Even his own staff are subject to criticism: “I think that I’m a better speechwriter than my speechwriters,” Mr. Obama told Patrick Gaspard, his political director, at the start of the 2008 campaign, according to The New Yorker. “I know more about policies on any particular issue than my policy directors. And I’ll tell you right now that I’m going to think I’m a better political director than my political director.”

New N.C. poll gives Romney small lead in presidential race. By Jim Morrill
Excerpt: Republican Mitt Romney appears to have gotten his bounce from his party’s national convention – at least in the state hosting the Democratic convention, according to a poll released Sunday. The new Elon University/Charlotte Observer Poll shows the GOP presidential candidate leading President Barack Obama 47 percent to 43 percent in North Carolina.

Concord OK with event that wasn’t. By Lukas Johnson
Excerpt: Less than a dozen delegates showed up for a mimosa brunch and shopping event that was planned for 150 guests at The Hotel Concord Sunday. For the past year, Stacie Jacobs has been working with nearly 20 local businesses that will help cater to hundreds of visiting delegates staying in Cabarrus County for the DNC. Jacobs said a lot of people expressed interest in coming, but they didn’t have to pay the $50 fee in advance. Fewer than 10 percent of them had shown up by around noon.

DNC security rules trigger free speech worries
Excerpt: Starting Saturday, someone walking through Charlotte's central business district could run afoul of the law by carrying water bottles, hair spray, socks or magic markers under sweeping security rules enacted ahead of the Democratic National Convention….The special rules that went into effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday could also bar anyone other than government employees from carrying handbags and backpacks or possessing soda cans, drink coolers, scarves, bike helmets, baby strollers or pets not specifically permitted as service animals….Somewhat counter-intuitively, handguns and rifles are not included in the long list of potential weapons banned by the city.

Obama Blames Washington Gridlock, Partisanship on Family, Daughters. By Tony Lee
Excerpt: President Barack Obama is partly blaming his family and children for his inability to lessen Washington’s partisanship and gridlock during his first term. On CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday show, Jessica Yellin said she interviewed Obama for a forthcoming documentary and asked him why he did not do more outreach to Republicans in the beginning of his term to bridge the divides Obama often rails against. Yellin said Obama told her one of the reasons he did not was because he wanted to spend more time at home with his kids and family.

U.S. halts training of some Afghan forces
Excerpt: The U.S. military has suspended training of some Afghan forces while the Americans review the process of vetting new recruits following a spike in deadly attacks on international troops last month, officials said Sunday. There have been 34 attacks by Afghan police or soldiers on their international allies so far this year — at least 12 in August alone. The members of the Afghan security forces have killed 45 international troops, putting intense strain on the relationship.

With Iran Strike Looming, Obama Admin Distances From Israel. By AWR Hawkins
Excerpt: The Obama administration doesn't trust the Israelis to wait until after the November elections before attacking Iran. And should Israel attack Iran soon, the administration doesn't want to give the impression that they prepared "something together with the Israelis against Iran." As if to teach Israel a lesson, the U.S. is sending Patriot anti-missile systems to Israel but has decided not to send crews to operate them. And instead of sending two Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense warships for Israel as previously agreed, the Obama administration is sending only one.

Bizarre blasphemy charge against Pakistan girl takes new bizarre twist. By John J. Xenakis
Excerpt: On August 16, Rimsha Masih, a developmentally disabled 14-year-old Christian girl in a suburb of Islamabad, Pakistan, was arrested for blasphemy, accused of burning papers containing verses from the Quran. The case drew worldwide outrage, as governments and human rights groups demanded that she be released. Even Muslim groups demanded leniency. Suddenly the case has taken a new bizarre twist, as Imam Khalid Jadoon, the Muslim cleric who had originally accused Rimsha of blasphemy, has himself been accused of manufacturing evidence.

MSNBC Host Loses Cool
Excerpt: ‘MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry became visibly upset over business owners calling themselves "risk takers" and began screaming on air.’ (Video)

Stephanopoulos: No Bias In Media
Excerpt: MRCTV's Joe Schoffstall ran into "Good Morning America" host George Stephanopoulos at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida. When asked if he believes there is a liberal bias in the media, he responds, "I don't." When asked again, he walks away.

Closing Sale: All Obama Gear 25% Off! By Ben Shapiro
Excerpt: This morning, the Obama Store 2012 sent out an email just in time for the Democratic National Convention: all gear is 25% off on all purchases more than $10 or more! Is this just a last-minute attempt to reap dollars off of those too stingy to buy Obama gear at full price? Or is this the sign of a campaign desperate to rake in the cash before they go completely out of business? (I wonder if the price of entry to win dinner with BO has dropped from $3? ~Bob.)

VP Says It’s Too Hot Outside To Explain How Americans Are Better Off
Excerpt: Looks like the “Are you better off” question is making some Team Obama take notice. In Detroit today, Vice President Biden stated that Americans were better off now. He said he’d go into detail why, but it… oh just watch:

Worth Reading: The Unseen Class War That Could Decide The Presidential Election. By Joel Kotkin
Excerpt: Blaming a disliked minority — rich business folks — has morphed into a predictable strategy for President Obama’s Democrats, stripped of incumbent success. But all the talk of “one percent” versus “the ninety nine percent” misses new splits developing within both the upper and middle classes.

Photo: Dems To Use Trick Photography To Fill Convention Hall? By John Nolte
Excerpt: There's no question that, like most failed incumbents, Obama has an enthusiasm gap to deal with this year. Long before Clint Eastwood forever branded Obama an "empty chair," the President has been plagued by the disturbing optics of a one-time political rock star no longer able to pack a house. …And from the looks of Klein's photo, if the people won't come to see The One, The One will simply lower the oceans, heal the planet, and manufacture his own adoring multitudes.

Media Ignores Ryan Crowd For A Few Pro-Obama Protesters. By Dana Loesch
Excerpt: Breitbart News's Joel Pollak reports from a Paul Ryan event in North Carolina that media is virtually ignoring the thousands attending the event in favor of a few pro-Obama protesters:….There's certainly no harm in covering both sides of the event, but the media's picture-proven preference for the few protesters over the thousands waiting in line (and thousands more turned away from lack of accommodation, Pollak remarks) is biased. The suggestion that the presence of a few protesters is equal to that of the thousands there to see Ryan is misleading.

Detroit Welcomes Biden: Equipment Truck Stolen Off Street
Excerpt: A U-Haul truck loaded with equipment for a Monday event featuring Vice President Joe Biden was stolen in Detroit Sunday, a spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service said. “A U-Haul that we were utilizing was stolen at the Westin Hotel overnight,” Ed Donovan told CNN. Donovan would not specify what equipment was in the U-Haul at the time it was stolen, and added that the theft shouldn’t affect the vice president’s plans on Monday. (So much for the Secret Service. Caught with pants down in SA. Losing gun on Romney’s plane. Now lost Biden’s truck in Detroit…. --Barb)

Excerpt: In addition to reading, writing, and arithmetic, the Denver public schools system are adding a fourth ‘r’ to the curriculum: rebellion…. In order to achieve a coveted “distinguished” rating, teachers at each grade level must show that they “encourage” students to “challenge and question the dominant culture” and “take social action to change/improve society or work for social justice.” The new DPS teacher assessment system, called LEAP (Leading Effective Academic Practice), stems from state legislation passed in 2010 and is overwhelmingly funded by a $10M grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The philosophy of Obama’s speechwriters: "Thank goodness for cut and paste." By Billy Hollis
Excerpt: Of course, politicians routinely repeat their stump speeches, so you could generate a video with repeated mantras for almost anyone in office. But this many, four years apart?

‘In Their Faces’: Republicans Borrow Page fm Obama’s Book, Will Stage Counter Convention in NC. By Joel B. Pollak
Excerpt: In 2008, an aggressive candidate Barack Obama told supporters to “argue with them, get in their faces.” In 2012, Republicans are taking a page from Obama’s book, holding a “counter-convention” outside the Democratic National Convention at the Time Warner Cable Arena in CharlotteNC. While Republican nominee Mitt Romney will be keeping a low profile all week, his party is taking the fight straight to the gates of the opposition.

Excerpt: Everyone knows that Barack Obama has a skin issue. Liberals pretend that it’s skin color. The real issue, though, concerns thickness, not color.

Pro-Obama Racism in L.A.? No Dog-Whistle Decoder Required
Excerpt: The pro-Obama left is on a frantic hunt for “dog whistle” racism on the part of Republicans — an absurd exercise in amateur mind-reading which they feel compelled to do in the absence of any actual Republican racism. While the debate rages as to whether this is just psychological projection by the race-obsessed left, no one seems to notice the blunt in-your-face unequivocal racism expressed by some of Obama’s very own supporters. “Once you go black, you never go back! Obama 2012,” accompanied by a classic Obama “Hope” portrait.

Excerpt: The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), which bills itself as “the largest Islamic umbrella organization in North America,” is meeting in WashingtonD.C., this weekend for its annual conference. One former ISNA speaker won’t be in attendance this year — al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki was killed in a CIA drone strike in Yemen on September 30, 2011….One of his co-panelists in 2001, Hamza Yusuf, is one of this year’s keynote speakers. At the 1995 ISNA convention, Yusuf told the crowd that Judaism “is a most racist religion.”

Excerpt: Harris-Perry’s folk-Marxist freakout isn’t that surprising – while the polls are still close, there does seem to be plenty of flopsweat on the left right now. ….But consider the venue: MSNBC, and the history wrapped up in that network’s call sign. Microsoft was, of course, formed by Bill Gates after he dropped out of Harvard in the mid-‘70s, when the idea of a personal computer still seemed like something out of Star Trek or 2001: A Space Odyssey.
